Chain Link Fence: The Industry Standard for Perimeter Security
Chain link fencing remains the most cost-effective and widely installed perimeter fencing solution across residential, commercial, and industrial applications. At NMI Fence Supply, we stock a complete range of galvanized chain link fence fabric, framework, and fittings — everything contractors need to complete any job from a backyard enclosure to a high-security perimeter.
Galvanized vs. Vinyl-Coated Chain Link
Galvanized chain link fence is the standard choice for most installations. The zinc coating provides excellent corrosion resistance at a lower price point. For projects requiring enhanced aesthetics or additional corrosion protection, vinyl-coated (PVC) chain link is available in black, green, brown, and white. The vinyl layer bonds to the galvanized wire underneath, delivering dual-layer protection that can extend fence life by 10-15 years in harsh environments.
Understanding Wire Gauges and Mesh Sizes
Chain link fabric is specified by wire gauge and mesh opening size. The three most common gauges are:
- 9 gauge (0.148") — Heavy-duty commercial and industrial applications. Required for most DOT and municipal specifications.
- 11 gauge (0.120") — Standard commercial grade. Suitable for commercial properties, schools, and parks.
- 11.5 gauge (0.113") — Residential grade. Ideal for backyard fences and pet enclosures where budget is a priority.
Mesh openings typically range from 2" (standard) down to 3/8" for specialty applications like tennis courts and small animal containment. A smaller mesh provides better security but increases material cost and wind load.
Residential vs. Commercial vs. Industrial Chain Link
The primary differences between residential, commercial, and industrial chain link systems are the post gauge, rail diameter, and fabric weight. Residential systems use 1-3/8" top rail and lighter line posts. Commercial installations step up to 1-5/8" rail and heavier posts. Industrial and high-security projects require 1-7/8" or larger framework with 9-gauge fabric.
Fabric Rolls and Pre-Assembled Sections
We supply chain link fabric in standard rolls of 50 feet, with heights from 3 feet to 12 feet. Custom heights and roll lengths are available for large-scale projects. For contractors looking to speed up installation, pre-assembled gate frames and tension bar assemblies reduce on-site labor.
Fittings and Hardware
A complete chain link installation requires more than fabric. Our fittings inventory includes tension bands, brace bands, rail ends, post caps, tension bars, tie wires, hog rings, and carriage bolts. We stock fittings for both residential (1-3/8") and commercial (1-5/8" and 2") pipe sizes. See our fence post spacing guide for detailed layout recommendations.
